THE Evening News will pay tribute to the footballing legacy of Steve Coulson by awarding a trophy in his memory each season.
The man known as Mr Edgehill - who won 13 league titles and 31 cups during his 21-year managerial reign at the Saturday League side - died aged 52 last week after a lengthy battle with illness.
Steve, who spent 30 years in all at Edgehill first as
a player and then manager, ended his spell at the club in 2004 in typically successful fashion with a treble-winning campaign.
Since his death tributes have been pouring in from the local football community.
Evening News sports editor Charles Place said: "Steve was a hugely influential figure in the local game and his achievements with Edgehill and at Scarborough and District level speak for themselves.
"It seems entirely appropriate that his memory should live on within Scarborough football and we believe the award of an annual trophy in his name is the way to do it.
"Steve was a winner but also believed that the game should be played in the right spirit - that is a legacy that should be kept going in the Saturday League and our award will hopefully reflect that."
Steve's sons Alec, Martin, John and Michael have all followed in the footballing footsteps of their dad, and Alec - the present manager of Edgehill - said: "My dad loved football and particularly football at a local level in Scarborough.
"I am sure he would have been thrilled to have a trophy awarded in his memory," added Alec, who has agreed to present the trophy along with the Evening News towards the end of the 2008-09 season.
