PUPILS from a Scarborough primary school were given food for thought after a visit to a supermarket in the town.

The Year Two children from Northstead School took a trip to Sainsburys to find out about the different foods of the world.

Their visit was designed to enhance studies in the classroom about the origins of food and how it travels across the globe before ending up on their plates.

During their trip the children checked out various fruits in the store’s produce section and also had a look at the fish counter and tasted cheese and breads.

Teacher Tracey Wardill said they had enjoyed a great time, adding the trip had helped their understanding of the topic immensely.

She said: “They really enjoyed it and it was good for them to see where things come from.

“They were allowed to have a look at the fruit and took it back to the classroom to check on a map where it had been grown.

“They were also shown where the deliveries are made to the store to give them an idea just how far food travels.

“Sainsburys also come into school and give talks about their links to Fairtrade products which the children really enjoy.”
