You fixed it for Jim!
The footpath to be named Savile's View
THE legacy of legendary entertainer Sir Jimmy Savile will forever remain a facet of Scarborough after a popular walkway was named in his honour.
A footpath leading from Sir Jim’s former flat in Esplanade down to the Spa Bridge will be renamed Savile’s View.
The move comes after the Evening News spearheaded a campaign to name an area of Scarborough in memory the eccentric Top of the Pops star, who died aged 84 in October last year.
A sister project to bring a statue of Sir Jim to the town is also continuing to gather momentum.
Cllr David Jeffels said the competition to bequeath an area of the town to Sir Jim was a worthy cause, though joked one suggestion may have lead to certain repercussions.
He said: “This was a pathway that Sir Jim used regularly on his many runs around the South Bay.
“When we found the path did not have a name we thought it most appropriate to honour him in this way and I’m sure it will be very much appreciated by the people of Scarborough.
“We had a number of great suggestions in the competition, including Savile Row, though we felt we might be in competition with the top tailors in London!
“Sir Jim loved Scarborough and Scarborough had a great affection for him and all of his charitable work.
“Sir Jim fixed it for a lot of people and we now want to fix it for him.”
Under the plans, a special gold plaque will also be put up at his former home.
Scarborough and District Civic Society were integral in the move, with chairman Adrian Perry hailing the decision.
He added: “Sir Jim loved Scarborough and had very strong connections with the town.
“The blue plaque scheme normally only honours someone who passed away at least 20 years ago.
“That is why we went for the gold plaque.
“He was such a philanthropist and raised a tremendous amount of money for charity.”
Mr Perry added he hoped the plaque could be put up in the spring.

Saturday, February 11, 2012 at 07:21 PMBored. Bored with endless sermons about what a great man Jimmy Savile was, from people who never met him. Bored with continuing innuendo about his darker side, from cowards who would not dare to speak out while he was alive, now please either put up or shut up. But above all just plain bored bored bored with Jimmy Boring Savile, can we have some news please?

Saturday, February 11, 2012 at 06:29 PMActually this could be a chance for the Council to make a few £ by installing a coin operated telescope on this pathway. Punters could then use it to see whether they could spot any Cunard vessels passing in the distance. First one to spot a ship gets a £10 voucher to spend at Sports Direct.

Friday, February 10, 2012 at 03:11 PM#14 To be honest, I don't even want to see a statue of Jimmy Savile in our town. It doesn't belong here.If the council must, then go ahead and put a plaque on the wall of his holiday flat, but statues are out of order. As you said, your father did more for the town, and so have many others done more than run about in tacky outfits. I think he had enough from us when he took over our cemetery with his "look at me" grave.

Thursday, February 9, 2012 at 03:55 PMIf the main criteria for getting a gold plaque are that you have to love Scarborough and have strong connections to it , why can't I have one too ?

Thursday, February 9, 2012 at 03:53 PMCount me out Scarborough Borough Council - I don't want to contribute to the renaming of streets in honour of someone whose only real link with Scarborough was that he had a part time flat here. Well, my Dad spent 37 years working for the NHS, saving lives , delivering babies , risking his life being swung down cliff faces to rescue people - if anyone deserves a statue or a street named after him, it's my Dad.As I appreciate that it's not going to happen , that real heroes are quiet unassuming people who don't crave the limelight or expect monuments to be erected to them after they are gone. So, if people want to pay for a statue of Jimmy Saville , a fund should be set up for voluntary contributions - Personally, I would rather give a donation to a charity .

Wednesday, February 8, 2012 at 07:40 PMFor heaven's sake the man wasn't born in Scarborough! His Mother lived in a flat here and he stayed in it occasionally. More recently he spent more time there, and in the garage topping up his fuel guzzling car whilst smoking a cigar. What a hero! Ok, he did charity work, but so have many Scarborians and they should be recognised for their work before an out-of-towner! Statue indeed.....
