Woman pleads not guilty over stamps

At the Borough Police Court today, before the Mayor (councillor H.C. Chrimes, in the chair), Councillor L Hopwood, Mr A J. Tugwell and Mr G Rowntree.

Selina Johnson of 90 St Thomas Street, was charged with having stolen a book containing a quantity of trading stamps, value of 1 2s 6d, and goods of Priestly Waites, between the 1st and 7th November. Prisoner resides over the shop of Mr Waites, who carries on a business as a baker and confectioner. He kept in the shop two books of trading stamps. On the 1st November he was certain that the book of trading stamps was on the shelf in the shop. On November 3rd he missed the stamps, and wrote to headquarters about them, and was told that the prisoner had sent the stamps to them, with the request for a watch. He also communicated with the Scarborough Branch of the Trading Stamp Co., and later Mrs Johnson came in the shop and changed the other half of stamps for a dinner set.

Detective Yeoman stated that he arrested the prisoner and charged her with the offence. He said she found the book outside the house and pointing to a young woman, said "She was with me when I found it." The Prisoner went into the box and stated that she had found them on St Thomas' Walk. They were quite loose, and had no cover on them. Miss Russell was in the house at the time, and she went in and remarked to her how glad she was at finding them, as she had a quarter book and she would now be able to get a dinner service and a watch. She received the dinner service and gave it to her daughter as a present.

The magistrate retired, and on returning found the prisoner guilty, and sentenced her to 14 days hard labour without option of a fine.

Prisoner: Oh Sir; is my word to go for nothing.
