SEAMER Horse Fair came under discussion at a video conference meeting between Scarborough councillors and their counterparts in Horsmonden, Kent.

The link-up came about following a suggestion from a member of the public, who had heard about an annual horse fair in the village.

Cllr Helen Mallory, chairman of Seamer Parish Council, said the meeting at the Town Hall had gone very well.

Those present at either end of the video link included Borough councillors, parish councillors and police officers who normally deal with the horse fairs.

Cllr Mallory said: “It was a good chance for us to share experiences and it was quite informative.

“All parties found it very interesting. However, in Horsmonden the fair is just one day, and many of our issues in Seamer and Crossgates relate to more than one day.”

She added that more detail about the discussion will be available at the next meeting of Seamer Parish Council, which will be held at the Memorial Hall in Seamer on February 2 at 7pm.

Cllr Mallory said that all those involved with to do everything they can to help residents in Seamer and Crossgates.

She added: “We are interested in talking to anybody who can give us any help of information which will benefit our residents.”

Seamer Horse Fair takes place in July each year, with travellers staying in the area for up to two weeks.

Horsmonden Gypsy Horse Fair is around 400 years old and takes place on the second Sunday in September every year.

"The date of your next meeting isn't the best either." I should add I've seen the date advertised as 14th Feb, but this article is different.

"How could villagers make this appeal on their own Tim and what are the chances of success?" Are your Councillors not pushing this hard on your behalf? I've already asked my Ward Councillors long ago to give your Ward Councillors any support they need and they have agreed. If no one makes a move then you'll never be rid of it. I think you'll find that most Ward Councillors want rid of it? You just need to canvas them all (other folks in other wards will canvas on your behalf if they don't want to talk directly to people who are not in their wards) and if there is a sizable majority of Ward Councillors supporting you then there is every reason for SBC to do something. At the moment we don't know why SBC don't support your cause. Find out why and push hard. The date of your next meeting isn't the best either.

#9 Tim Thorne. 'Both SBC and the Police are scared of the repercussions from the travellers if it is stopped.' Therefore they do not appear to want to support the villagers to get it stopped. Police spokeperson has stated at parish meetings that there is a significant increase in incidents during the fair yet no arrests! The police have stated that they cannot police any greater number than last year despite numbers increasing by about 50% per annum. The council are to request planning permission to make the site permanant after the next event! Other areas have the backing of their councils in their appeals to the SOS to ban it. How could villagers make this appeal on their own Tim and what are the chances of success?

"Almost everyone at Seamer and Crossgates wants this fair stopped" Does anyone actually know how to get the correct documentation to the Secretary of State to get it stopped?

Once again the spectre of the horse fair raises its ugly head. Why is it that these people can ignore the law, run horse around on the road, pay scant regard to other road users and the police let them? Why should they receive significant financial support in terms of a dedicated site, marshallingsecurity and the subsequent clearing up of the mess they leave? I'm sure that the gypsies and their liberal NIMBY supporters will cry 'human rights' - what about human responsibilities? Perhaps SBC should charge them - but then they have no identified income so have no money! If I want to holiday somewhere I have to pay and abide by the rules of the place I'm staying or suffer the consequences. But then I'm not from a minority group and the state would see me as an easy target to show how they enforce the law and democracy.

What I don’t understand about travellers is why an exclusive site that is just for their use needs to be provided. There are numerous places, if not hundreds near to Scarborough. They are called camping and caravan sites. All of them take people with various forms of mobile accommodation, be it Tent, Caravan or Motorhome. The Travellers could then stay as long as they wanted, as long as they pay the rent due and so surly no one would care then. If they do want this exclusive site just for them selves, because it is “their human rights” then isn’t it discriminating to all other campers “human rights” that they are not treated to such cheap camping by SBC?

Have just checked the SPC web page and the next meeting is on 14th February at the Memorial Hall in Seamer and not 2nd Feb as stated in this article. Perhaps the SEN could correct this - it would help if the correct information is given out especially about meetings!

Almost everyone at Seamer and Crossgates wants this fair stopped and many have lobbied the parish meetings each year because of all the trouble and intimidation caused by these freeloaders. Most travellers come for a cheap holiday. There have been petitions, letters and meetings by outraged villagers - to no avail. The Travellers are on the agenda of every Parish Council meeting but SPC have no power at all. Both SBC and the Police are scared of the repercussions from the travellers if it is stopped. So where does that leave the villagers? SBC and the Police sometimes attend the Parish meetings but seem to want the villagers to find an alternative site which is not their job. I agree that SBC is paid by us, to work for us and they are not doing their job - as long as it is not on their doorstep they don't care. More and more travellers come every year to abuse Scarborough's hospitality. This fair will grow to the size of Appleby if it continues to increase at the present rate. Is this sort of tourism Scarborough wants?

"Why haven't our Scarborough and Seamer got together and had this fair stopped?" Has someone who lives in Seamer asked the Ward Councillors for Seamer about this?

They won't have it stopped because the "travellers" (gyppos) would no doubt start to bleat about their "human" rights being abused! It's the residents living nearby that I feel sorry for, as they have to endure two weeks of anti-social behaviour (to put it mildly) from this scum. These, the residents, are the people who should be listened to, not the garbage who infest their neighbourhood every year!!!

Why haven't our Scarborough and Seamer got together and had this fair stopped? They know they can, but every year they spend a fortune of our council tax on this - and know it is unwanted by those paying the council tax! The council is being paid by us to work for us and they aren't doing their job!
