AN ANNUAL collection of gift filled shoeboxes was launched on Saturday (October 29) with a special family fun day at Queen Street Methodist Church.

Operation Christmas Child organiser Ros Dyson said that she was pleased with the number of volunteers who turned out to help and they were hoping to pack 300 boxes to kick start this year’s collection.

She said: “It’s amazing. There are new people that haven’t been here before and those that have heard about it or have been brought along by their friends.”

Each of the shoeboxes are wrapped in Christmas paper and filled with a variety of items including: crayons, books, soaps, flannels, toys, sweets, hats, scarves and gloves.

Mrs Dyson said: “We use anything that a child would be pleased to receive at Christmas when they have nothing.”

Last year volunteers collected a total of 6,200 boxes which were sent to Eastern European countries including Georgia, Romania and Belarus.

Mrs Dyson said she did not know yet where this year’s collection would be headed.

She said: “A lot of people have knitted hats, scarves and gloves. They have been knitting all year. As soon as this is finished they will start again.”

The charity needs £2.50 per box to cover shipping costs and donations are always welcome.

Boyes and The Catalogue Shop in Scarborough helped by donating a lot of the shoeboxes.

Mrs Dyson said: “People are so generous – the generosity is so amazing.”
