Seafront skipping day
PEOPLE of all ages joined in the fun at Scarborough’s annual Pancake Day skipping in South Bay.
Crowds of people gathered in Foreshore Road, which was closed off to traffic for the traditional event.
Among those skipping on the seafront were Marie Sheader and her sons George, 12, Harry, 15 and Jacob, 17.
The family come from Kilham, near Driffield, for the festivities every year.
Mrs Sheader, 43, said: “We’ve always come if the kids have been on school holidays.
“It’s just good fun and they always enjoy it. They always ask if we’re going skipping!”
Claire Kerr, of Lyell Street, was at the beach with her husband, father in law, nephews Matty, seven, Ben, six, and stepson Robbie, seven.
The 30 year old theatre nurse said: “It’s lovely for the kids and it’s nice they get some time off school.
“We always come down if we’re not at work. The children love it.”
Teacher Giovanni Braida, of Stepney, brought his son Joss, seven, to take part.
He said: “It’s a good tradition and we should keep it as it is.
“It’s a very unique thing for the town. I like to teach my children about traditions and Joss really likes it.”
Mr Braida added that on the same day in Italy, people celebrate the last day of Carnival, which is a massive celebration in Catholic countries.
Ground worker George Ingle, of St John’s Avenue, was with his wife, Sue, and grandson Tommy, who is nearly two.
He said: “It’s brilliant. It’s a good thing for Scarborough and you see people you haven’t seen in ages.”
Scarborough Sea Cadets were busy serving hungry skippers with pancakes at their headquarters in East Sandgate.
Chief Petty Officer Julie Davies said: “It’s been great - we’ve been really busy.
“We’ve had 10 Sea Cadets waiting on and lots of mums and dads helping in the kitchen, and doing teas and coffees.”
