Scarborough girl's downfall at Grimsby
Some sad details of a Scarborough girl's life were given at Grimsby police court on Wednesday, when Louisa Plummer, a young married woman, was remanded charged with wandering about without visible means.
Chief constable Stirling said that the prisoner came of a very good family. She was married at sixteen, and her husband ill-treated her, and she had left him. Since then she had been on the down grade, living a loose life. She had been in Grimsby for some time and various efforts had been made to reclaim her.
On one occasion she tried to commit suicide, but was discharged on promising to enter a home. She never went to the home, and had since fallen into her old habits. She was found sleeping in a stable in the early hours of the morning. She had no money and no home, and was locked up. Mr Stirling said that he had a serious talk with the young woman, and he thought that she was now inclined to enter a home if given an opportunity.
The stipendiary remanded the prisoner for three days to give the police court missionary a chance to find a home for her.
