Risky timing of vehicle checks

WHAT a wonderful sight to witness the final year students of Scalby School arriving at the Royal Hotel in their splendid attire to attend and celebrate their final time together before venturing out to pastures new.

My wife and I were there to see our gorgeous granddaughter arriving with her friends to celebrate this very special occasion.

As the vehicles began to arrive, including stretch limousines, vintage cars, a fire engine, a customised three-wheeled motorcycle, a horse-drawn carriage and many others, it very quickly became apparent why three representatives in their fluorescent jackets from the police, Scarborough Council and VOSA were there.

As the vehicles arrived these authorities quickly surrounded them and began questioning the drivers and taking notes. All of this was taking place outside the Royal Hotel with young people still inside and many others greeting friends in the street.

I later questioned these authorities as to what they were looking for and the police officer from the traffic division stated a check was being done to see if licensed vehicles were legal to carry passengers, and I presume, checking for other likely infringements.

He went on to say he was only doing his job in protecting the young passengers. Well, he should have been more concerned with their safety in general.

There was no control of vehicles, whether being checked or through traffic, and on many occasions the road was partially or totally blocked. Well done authorities, what a place and time to mount such an operation.

It would be of interest to know if a prior "risk assessment" of the operation was undertaken. The consequence of any injuries received would be unthinkable.

Upholding the law is one thing, but authorities, next time please do it somewhere else and under proper management.

I and many others witnessing our children's special occasion were utterly disgusted.
