Pancake race a big success

CROWDS in Scarborough’s town centre were in for a flippin’ great time at the annual Pancake Race.

This year the event was titled “Strictly Pancakes” with entrants marked on their style and outfit, rather than just speed.

People of all ages gathered to watch the fun-filled town centre spectacle in Aberdeen Walk, with commentary by Yorkshire Coast Radio.

A total of 17 teams from local businesses, organisations and groups took part, with entrants donning some eye-catching fancy dress outfits.

Participants made their way along an obstacle course which featured jumps, slalom sections and a hula hoop – all whilst carrying a frying pan and pancake.

Teams were marked out of 40 by a panel of judges, including Miss Scarborough Leanne Wilford, Carolyn Jackson of St Catherine’s Hospice and Bonnie and Brian Purchon.

Judging criteria included team fancy dress, pancake flipping at markers, amount of pancake left in the frying pan at the end of the relay along with skill and style.

Two teams scored an impressive 39 points to make it into the final. These were Scarborough Hospitality (Team 2) and the Stephen Joseph Theatre.

The Scarborough Evening News team, featuring reporters Ian Johnson and Susan Stephenson, scored a less impressive 31, leaving them in joint last place.

Following a close battle, the winners were the Stephen Joseph Theatre team who pipped Scarborough Hospitality at the post by just one point.

Winners Jaye Lewis and James Drawneek were presented with the coveted Golden Frying Pan award.

Jaye said: “We’d like to thank the Scarborough community for having such a fantastic event.

“It really is nice to be able to do something like this.”

Organiser Nick Taylor said: “I’m really happy with how it’s gone today. We’ve had 17 teams taking part, which is a great result, and the winners were fantastic.

“It’s always a great, fun event and a lovely occasion all round.

“People like to come and watch, then head down to the beach.”

The race followed the ringing of the Pancake Bell in North Street, which signals the start of Scarborough’s traditional and unique Shrove Tuesday celebrations.
