Open Air Theatre project is good for town
ON a visit to Scarborough last week, my husband I were surprised and delighted to see the work in progress to rebuild the open air theatre, which holds many happy memories and hopefully good things for the town in the future.
My parents were both in the chorus in the years just before the war and I was a regular on duty as a St John cadet in the early 60s and saw the shows and crowds that flocked to see them.
When we donated to the Civic Societies initiative of the Scarborough Belles, in memory of our parents, our imagination had been captured by the illustration of the Diving Belle leaping into the future.
This undertaking is a bold leap, matching what Scarborough did with a government loan in the depression, when the North Side development was carried out, and the town benefited from a vision which aimed higher than the short term or sectional interest. It will be a success if it is used with boldness and could mirror the successes of the late 30s and post war period.
A great variety of events can be held but the keynote must be quality.
I believe your paper captured what Scarborough needs to proclaim far and wide, "the largest open air theatre since ancient times".
We go every season to open air Shakespeare in Stamford, Lincolnshire, the performances are second to none, but along with the actual theatre is the opportunity to picnic outside with friends on a pleasant grassed area, a total experience.
People from far and wide will beat a very long path to events of quality. We wish the project every success.
