No excuse for council tax rise
NORTH Yorkshire County Council consulted on raising its share of the council tax by 2.5 per cent, then, lo and behold, we get some bad weather which caused problems with potholes in our roads, so it seized the opportunity to raise the tax even further by 2.95 per cent.
Did it consult again before raising the amount? No, it did not. It passed the new rise of 2.95 per cent.
Now let's look at this in more detail. The county council is composed of mainly Conservatives and Independents, the parties which voted for this rise.
the Lib Dems voted against and were the only party to do so, saying the rise should be left at 2.5 per cent and the money needed for the road repairs be taken out of the cash reserves of the council.
It certainly goes against the principle of consulting. We are barely out of recession, people are still feeling the pinch and will for some time to come, and yet they still do not care.
They consult, then do something completely different. Where is the transparency and honesty in that.
