Night of miltary splendour proves a force-ful fundraising event

THOUSANDS of pounds have been passed on to deserving causes following Scarborough’s Night Before the Colours event.

The military-style fundraiser took place in November at the Spa Complex, raising an impressive total of £24,000.

It featured a mess-style four course meal, entertainment by The Band of the Yorkshire Volunteers and Regimental Corp of Drums and a spectacular firework display.

Organisers have now handed £4,000 to both the Yorkshire Regiment Benevolent Fund and the Royal British Legion Scarborough Poppy Appeal.

Captain Tony Viney, one of the organisers, said: “It was a great evening and everybody seemed to enjoy it.

“The turnout was off the scale and I can only say thank you to everyone who attended.

“As an ex-soldier myself I can see the good it can do and I know that it means a lot to people.”

He continued: “The amount raised was incredible. I didn’t expect it to be anything like that.

“But the support for the military in Scarborough is always great.

“We’re very, very happy.”

Mr Viney added that Scarborough’s support for the forces also manifests itself every year on Armed Forces Day, which attracts thousands of people to Scarborough’s South Bay each year.

He also said that the Heroes’ Welcome scheme, which began in Scarborough, is has now gone national and has been taken on in London.

A cheque for £4,000 was also presented to the Royal British Legion Scarborough Poppy Appeal.

Coordinator Beryl Anderson said: “We felt, as a local charity, very honoured that they’d chosen our charity to receive the donation.

“We feel very privileged as there are a lot of other charities in Scarborough.

“It’s a large amount of money which will go towards the welfare of all service personnel and their dependants and families.”

Mrs Anderson added that Scarborough’s Poppy Appeal so far stands at over £60,000. It will run until the end of September this year.

She said: “It’s the highest total since I took over five years ago.

“Last time the total was £59,000 and that was at the end of September!

“It’s absolutely amazing and I’m astounded by people’s generosity.”

Well I for one wouldn't dream of mocking the brave - if misguided - youths who join up and risk their lives for what they sincerely believe to be "our corner", but I think the retired non-combatants who exploit their previous military rank to further their own careers as promoters are well worth a few choice words from the likes of Amaroo, wherever he is these days.

God bless all the brave young (and older) men and women who risk and give their lives to fight our corner in such hostile countries as Iraq and Afghanistan. May they always be given a heroes welcome in Scarborough. Shame on the people who mock.

While I'm on then ... "impressive total of £24,000", and "Organisers have now handed £4,000 to both the Yorkshire Regiment Benevolent Fund and the Royal British Legion Scarborough Poppy Appeal". And the other £16,000 has gone ... where exactly? "deserving causes" they say, can't think of any cause more deserving than the Poppy Appeal, maybe Captain Viney could enlighten us? It seems strangely remiss of the SEN to omit such information.

You missed the "Regimental Corp of Drums" - Corp? Not to mention the "is has now gone national".

I think the word in your headline should be "Military".
