Husband and wife in fight on excursion train
At Norton (Malton) Police-court on Saturday Sam Bradbury and Lydia Bradbury, husband and wife of 112 Carlton-road, South Elmsall, were charged with wilfully interfering with the comfort of passengers travelling in a railway carriage at Rillington on 6th July. Only Mrs Bradbury appeared.
Superintendent Dobie of the N.E.R. Company, prosecuted,, and in stating the facts of the case, said that on the night of July 6th the defendants were returning with a trip from Scarborough. At Rillington they commenced quarrelling and fighting, the woman accusing the husband of having been with other people instead of going with her. A sixteen year old son of the defendants tried to seperate them, but as a result, all three were thrown upon the floor and a scuffle ensued.
Francis Murphy and George Hudson, miners, of South Elmsall, bore out Superintendent Dobie's statement. The latter said he had to stop the train on account of the disturbance. The conduct of the defendant greatly interfered with the comfort of himself and other passengers.
Mrs Bradbury denied that they were on the floor of the compartment. It was not because of her own behaviour, but that of the four others, that Mr Hudson stopped the train. Words passed between her and her husband,
she admitted, but she pleaded not
guilty.
The Bench fined the woman 10s and 19s 8d costs, and the male defendant 5s and 19s 8d costs.
A month was allowed for payment of the fines; in default, one months inprsonment.
