A SCARBOROUGH library threatened with the axe is set for an exciting new chapter.

Ayton Library was originally earmarked for closure next month as county council bosses fought the strain of swingeing budget cuts.

However, the facility has been retained after a valiant campaign from residents who spearheaded a drive to preserve the revered building.

The community-based Derwent Valley Books, Resources, Information, Diversity, Groups, Education group will take over the day-to-day running of the library from April 1.

However, despite their strong rearguard action, the group still need further volunteers and have appealed for people to come forward and assist with the library’s running.

Suzanne Carr, a member of the Derwent Valley Steering Group, said: “We had to present a full business plan to North Yorkshire County Council by the beginning of February and we need to start fundraising and making applications for funding now.

“For legal reasons the library will have to close for a short time after March 31 but we hope to make this as short as possible, so hopefully, no one will notice that we are not there.

“Setting up a community library service is a new venture for both sides and there are a lot of discussions going on regarding the type of service we want to offer and what will still be provided by the county council.

“We need ongoing support from the whole community if this venture is to be a success.

“We already have people from villages across the Derwent Valley who have volunteered their skills, their time and their ideas but we still need more help with a wide range of activities, including distributing information, helping run the library and helping to raise funds.”

The group are holding a coffee morning on Saturday between 10am and noon in Ayton Village Hall to meet with confirmed volunteers.

However, anyone interested in joining the group are very welcome to attend.

The county council also have a link for people wanting to volunteer which is available onlne at www.northyorks.gov.uk/libraryvolunteers

Instead of a waxing lyrical about the "valiant campaign from residents who spearheaded a drive to preserve the revered building", maybe the SEN should be spearheading a drive to preserve its readers' jobs? The way these articles about the idle rich turning someone's job into their hobby are trumpeted as Good News Stories frankly disgusts me.

Just what the Tories want- volunteers doing the jobs and people being sacked. I look forward to seeing a boy scout volunteer instead of my GP next- that's the way this Govt is heading.

And the people emptying our bins, building our homes, producing our food, keeping our streets safe, defending our shores, delivering our post, teaching our children, driving our buses and trains, mending our white vans, helping us when we are ill etc. need just as much to provided for their families as chief executives (and dare I say bankers?). Perhaps if politicians were paid the average wage (which they currently claim as £26k pa) it might focus their minds on resolution of the obscene inequalities of the world in general, and this country in particular.

I do not vote tory, they're all for the €U, as are labour and the libdems. Look at them all over there wasting our money on everything going that does no good to our country. Our money should be spent in this country on services for the people as it was intended to be - until the éú rolled into town and decided we should buy a new motorway for Zorba to ride his donkey and trap along. Think about it - Our Libraries need our money more than the €U does trying t make everything equal in some 18th century spanish village.

Just remember: this has nothing to do with the EU whatsoever. All you anti-EU xenophobes who were tricked into voting Tory by the likes of Hello Vera, this is what you have ended up with. It's your own fault for voting for them frankly. Not too late to do something about it though, if you are prepared to work a full day for no pay and do the job of a council employee who has been made redundant in the name of the Tory party.

Just remember: This country gives £51,000,000 every day to the €U. that is over £2,000,000 an hour. The libraries of North Yorkshi9re could survive all year on what they give the €U every hour. Now who voted for this shower?
