Futurist - leave it as it is !

RE: the Futurist.

Over the past few years the South Bay Traders' Association has taken the view that the redevelopment of the Futurist was key to the regeneration of the South Bay area.

This view was based on the understanding that the replacement building would be of iconic design and accommodate something that would bring diversity and innovation to this area.

There was talk of a centre for extreme sports, multi-screen cinema or even an arena-style event venue.

However, faced with the harsh economic realities of 2010, these high aspirations seem now to be no more than a fading pipe dream.

The reality is that the Futurist even in its present rather tatty condition brings much-needed additional revenue and custom to the area, and during the quiet winter months a show at the Futurist can make the difference between profit and loss to many of us operating in South Bay area.

It is therefore the majority view of the SBTA membership that unless something truly iconic is in the offing then the Futurist should be allowed to stay just as it is!

The thought of yet another derelict site or, worse, a construction of apartments more at ease in a Bulgarian ski resort, is just too frightening to contemplate!

Finally, it's worth remembering that we are the country's first resort and leading two-night stay destination.

Swap the word resort for cruise ship and then ask what is the largest single allocation of space aboard a modern cruise liner?

The answer is of course its theatre!
