Freddie flashback part of family photo album

Bill Ferrey, pictured around 20 years before the popular

Bill Ferrey, pictured around 20 years before the popular "Freddie" statue, below, came to Scarborough.

A SCARBOROUGH woman has unearthed a photo which bears an uncanny likeness to a popular Scarborough statue.

Jean Ferrey, of Osgodby Crescent, brought this picture into the Evening News after noticing it bore more than a passing resemblance to the “Freddie Gilroy and the Belsen Stragglers” sculpture in Marine Drive.

The photo is of her father-in-law, Bill Ferrey, who passed away a number of years ago.

Bill was from Bradford originally, but loved to visit Scarborough and spent many happy times in the town. Jean said: “I was just looking through some old photos and was struck by how much he looked like Freddie. It made we wonder whether anyone else had a likeness of him.”

She is not sure whether the photo was taken in Bradford or Scarborough, but believes it could have been at the bowling green at South Cliff.

Jean believes the picture was taken around 20 years ago. She added: “He was a great chap.”

4: It's news because it clearly caught your interest and elicited a response. It appears to be quite a nice innocent wholesome story.....of course if there had been a murder I'm sure that would have taken precedence.

OH GOD SHOOT ME NOW !! Its just a bloke on a bench wearing a hat for god sake... how is this news ?? He isn't even on the sea front! He looks nothing like the statue and even if he did its worthy for tomorrows chip wrappers. Does the editor of SEN actually read these comments? If you do... you should be ashamed of yourself. I have seen better journalistic skills from a 6 year old.

He doesn't look anything like Freddie. He is not covered in yellow paint for a start.
