MEMBERS of the National Farmers Union celebrated a successful year of fundraising at an event in Scarborough.

The union’s Yorkshire coast branch held their annual dinner and dance at the town’s Royal Hotel.

At the event, it was revealed that almost £1,000 had been raised for Diabetes UK and the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution over the course of 2011.

A further £850 was raised to help provide study grants for local students on agricultural or horticultural courses during the year.

Paul Lockey, Yorkshire coast branch chairman, said: “Members are keen to do their bit and contribute as much as possible to our ongoing fundraising effort. I would like to thank everyone who gave so generously to support our chosen charities and provide much needed assistance for students working hard to get started in our industry.”

For the 2012 fund, £800 was raised thanks partly to the auctioning of a cricket bat signed by the Yorkshire county team.
