Engineering week off to a great start

BUDDING youngsters are learning the mechanics of engineering at a three-day event taking place at the Spa.
Scarborough Engineering Week yesterday kicked off its second year, showcasing one of the town’s most successful industries.
Local, national and international companies are taking part in the event including Perry Slingsby Systems which has set up a sub sea simulator in the Grand Hall, Dale Erskine Power Solutions which has a power generation unit, worldwide systems designer Moog Inc with a Formula 1 car on display and the Angelic Bulldog Project exhibiting a specialist motorbike capable of speeds of up to 400mph.
Peter Wilkinson, an event co-ordinator, said the first day had been successful with almost 400 visiting students.
He said: “There’s lots of entertainment, encouraging young minds. There were queues to see robots, to get in JCBs and the F1 car.
“I think it certainly ticked all the boxes and Tuesday is expected to be even busier.”
Developed by businesses and education providers, the idea behind the week is to attract businesses to the town, grab the attention of youngsters and show them what can be achieved through a career in engineering.
Mr Wilkinson added: “It’s important for Scarborough to have a sustainable future in the niche market of 21st century engineering.
“It will all play a part in the future and a lot of skills are applicable to the Potash project who are headline sponsors.”
Visitors can also see a new Plaxtons coach outside the Spa alongside JCBs and a 1929 Leyland Tiger restored by Bluebird Vehicles, plus companies Castle Employment Agency, York Potash, NYnet, Yorkshire Coast College, Offshore Wind, The Imagineering Foundation, Unison, FARO, Electrolux, FANUC Robotics UK, Derwent Training Association, GC Motors and Wilfred Scruton.
The exhibition continues from 10am-4pm today and Wednesday from 9am-12pm.

Wednesday, October 12, 2011 at 09:11 AMA Stewart GP car, one of the mediocre F1 contenders that raced from the 1997 to 1999 seasons, the grooved tyres were introduced in 1998 ss likely 98 or 99 car, this car was retired and team sold before many of these youngsters were even born. Welcome to the future Scarborough Style.
