Drunk woman taken by handcart into custody
According to PC Wellburn, a woman who was before the Scarborough magistrates today (Wednesday) was transformed by drink into a "disgrace to womankind".
When before the court, however, and free from drink, she was a very different woman, appeared to be penitent, and begged hard to be given another chance, promising to leave the town.
The woman was Anne Slatterly (37), a hawker, of no fixed abode, and she was charged with having been drunk and disorderly in Falsgrave on May 11th, and further charged with having resisted PC Wellburn in the execution of his duty.
Slatterly said she knew nothing about it – she was very drunk.
PC Welburn detailed the trouble he had with the woman who was rolling about the road, and when taken into custody she behaved in the manner indicated by the words used by the constable – "a disgrace to womankind." He had to get a handcart to convey her to the police station.
It appeared that she had come into Scarborough during the weekend with 3 in her possession, and Inspector Craven said pawn tickets for two gold rings were found upon her. She had not, however, been convicted at Scarborough but the woman would not give a clear account of herself. He thought she had come from Hull.
Slatterly was understood to say that her husband was in the north, and if the magistrates would give her a chance, she would go straight away. She had not taken any drink, she said, for 12 months.
The magistrates said they would deal leniently with her. They would give her a chance to leave the town, and would adjourn the case to see if she did so.
