Come and sea... Festival’s programme is taking shape

A PROGRAMME awash with seafaring folk talent is being lined up for this year’s Scarborough Sea-fest.
Plans for the 2012 event are coming together as organisers apply for funding.
Seafest, which is celebrating its 13th anniversary, is this year being held between July 20 and 22.
The three-day event is due to start with an evening concert from special guest, former BBC Folk Singer of the Year Martin Carthy.
As in previous years, a host of performers will take to the stage on Scarborough’s West Pier throughout the festival.
The event also features an exhibition tent and a sea fish cookery marquee.
Cllr Janet Jefferson, chairman of the Seafest Committee, said: “We are working on the programme for this year’s event, and are in the process of securing funding through grants and sponsorship.
“It is always a popular event. Last year the seafood kitchen really drew in the crowds and we were overflowing with exhibitors so hopefully we will see similar success this year.
“I think it really is a wonderful event, which both residents and visitors come every year for.”
Each year scores of locals and holidaymakers visit Seafest, which celebrates Scarborough’s connections to fishing, the sea and maritime heritage.
As well as the events on the West Pier, local pubs take part, extending the music offering. They include The Merchant, The Leeds Arms, Anchorage Club, Lancaster Inn, Sub Aqua Club and The Leeds Hotel.
Other activities can also be found in the Sea Cadets Hall.
The line-up for this year’s guest list already includes Beggars Bridge, Tom & Barbara Brown, Monkeys Fist, Martin Curtis, Richard Grainger, 5 Men Not Called Matt, Malcolm Ward, Alan Whitbread, and Stormcrow.
There will also be the annual Blessing of the Boats service on the West Pier, co-ordinated by Rev Pam Jennings and St Mary’s Church, which takes place at 11.15pm on the Sunday of the festival.

Where will this event get an audience from when the coffin dodger freebie bus passes are abolished and so the wrinklies stay in?
