Brother and sister tried for stealing and receiving

The first case under the Children's Act was dealt with at Scarborough to-day (Thursday), when in the magistrates' room at the police court, before Mr J Sinfield (in the chair) and Alderman Rowntree, Harry Sanderson (12), 36 Victoria Street, was charged with having stolen from 2 Westfield Terrace two silk mufflers, valued together at 11s, being the property of Mr John Edward Thorley Graham between the 15th of November, 1908, and the 24th April, 1909.

He was further charged with having stolen from 2, The Crescent, one silk muffler, valued at 5s, being the property of Mrs Laura Copperthwaite, between the 1st and 13th December 1908.

His sister Ida Sanderson (18), was also charged with receiving stolen goods, knowing them to have been stolen.

Prisoners' father gave evidence and stated that the boy had a good character at school, and that he had not stolen the goods for want of money.

Prisoner admitted stealing all the mufflers and giving them to his sister to pawn. In one case he said that his sister had given him only 1d out of the proceeds.

The sister was next called and in answer to the charge against her denied receiving the goods while knowing them to have been stolen. Her brother she said, had told her that he had found them, and asked her if she could sell them, which she did at Mr Gibson's. Mr Gibson's manager, Mr GH Hall, stated that the girl brought the articles mentioned saying that she had brought them for her mother and they were her father's property. The magistrates said that the boy should take it as a warning. He should be under the care of Mrs Campion for 12 months. The girl would also be placed under the care of Mrs Campion. Both were bound over to be of good behaviour for twelve months under the sum of 5, or in default, the case would be proceeded with.

The magistrates also added that if the girl had not received the goods, the boy would not have been tempted a second time.
