A MAN who has volunteered at Scarborough Hospital for the past 12 years has been given an award for his efforts.

Charles Hayes, who works in reception as a volunteer welcomer, says he was delighted to hear the news.

The hospital trust presents an award every month to a member of staff who has gone above and beyond the call of duty.

Mr Hayes, of Cayton, said his role entails welcoming people to the hospital, helping them find their way to appointments and making sure they know where they can get a coffee or something to eat.

The retired legal executive said: “I thoroughly enjoy the role, especially the contact with people.

“Everyone is friendly and we all muck in together.”

He added that he first thought about volunteering after speaking to his sisters, who are both nurses.

Mr Hayes said: “They really put the idea in my mind. I wanted to do something to help and would encourage others to do the same.

“The best thing is meeting people and having a friendly chat.

“People are often worried when they come into hospital and it’s very rewarding to be able to help them and put them at ease.”

He added: “I was really very pleased to hear about the award. Especially as a volunteer, I’m very honoured.

“I’m grateful to those who nominated me and to the staff for their support.”

Mr Hayes volunteers at the hospital for three mornings a week and does half a day at St Catherine’s Hospice.
