FOUR years after his underwater Imax documentary Aliens of the Deep, and 12 years after his semi-submerged blockbuster Titanic, director James Cameron unleashes his latest special effects-laden blockbuster, which is rumoured to push the boundaries of
big-screen technology.
Paraplegic war veteran Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) enlists under warmonger Colonel Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang), who is attempting to infiltrate an alien race, the Na'vi, on their home planet of Pandora.
The alien world conceals vast deposits of an ore which is worth millions of dollars.
Unfortunately, Pandora will not support human life, so doctor Grace (Sigourney Weaver) comes up with a revolutionary plan to meld the minds of soldiers with Na'vi doppelgangers, who can move among the aliens undetected.
As his Na'vi alter ego, Jake meets beautiful warrior Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) and falls under her spell.
Moreover, he manages to become part of the upper echelons of Na'vi society.
When Quaritch declares war on Pandora and launches a full-scale invasion with heavily-armed gunships, Jake and his fellow soldiers Trudy (Michelle Rodriguez) and Parker (Giovanni Ribisi) pledge their support to the Na'vi to repel the human attack.
Avatar can be seen at the Plaza until Thu 18.
