THIS WEEK: SUN COURT CAFE, SPA COMPLEX, SCARBOROUGH

The Spa Complex is home to the Sun Court Café, and with fantastic views of Scarborough's South Bay it is the ideal place for a hearty meal, quick snack or a fairtrade hot beverage.
We decided a walk along the seafront was the order of the day and decided to pay the cafe a visit. Lots of people were sitting around tables in the sun court so what better place to stop for afternoon tea and a cake.
Inside the café, although quite large with plenty of tables, it is a little basic and in need of some T.L.C. Without the large windows overlooking the sun court the café would appear rather dark and gloomy.
At the long counter you can purchase hot and cold meals, pre-packed sandwiches, a small selection of fresh cream cakes and some pre-packed biscuits and cakes. (Not the nice homemade cakes we were imagining).
Because it was late afternoon there weren't many staff members on duty, but the one that served us was rather slow and stopped in the middle for a chat with another staff member, who was cleaning ready for
closing, which was still quite a way off.
We finally got our order and decided to go outside in the sun court and enjoy the sun, view and music from the Beached Festival.
There were plenty of deck chairs with a view of the stage and plenty of tables and chairs around the sides. Around the sun court is a beautiful display of flowerboxes, which is only to be expected from our excellent council gardeners.
Back to our cakes. Well! Very disappointing pre-packed chocolate flapjack and a bakewell slice, very dry and not much taste. (Maybe the Sunday carvery would have been a better option had we have been in time). The pot of tea was passable, but the milkshake left a lot to be desired.
The toilets were very nice, in beige and cream. Bits needed updating but the gorgeous fresh flower arrangements made up for this.
Overall not one of the best places we've experienced, but we enjoyed our time sitting in the sun court soaking up the sun.
Overall opinion ***
