Call centre success leads to jobs boost

TELEPHONE call centre company 1st Locate is set to create 30 new jobs at its Eastfield base.
At a time when many finance and technology based companies are relocating their businesses to the Far East, the Leeds firm decided to buck the trend and came to Scarborough almost a year ago.

The firm, based at Cayley Court, has now announced it i
s to enter a second phase of expansion which will create new jobs in the customer service sector.

Managing director Andrew Barclay said: "Of all the locations we could have chosen I am convinced we made the right move in coming to Scarborough.

"People in Scarborough have been able to demonstrate an appetite for new office-based employment.

"Although not always possessing wholly relevant experience, the new employees have shown a great ability to adapt and learn new skills."

According to Mr Barclay some 80,000 UK jobs have been lost to call centres relocating to countries like India in the past six years.

He said: "I feel the UK customer service industry has been very hasty in moving so many operations overseas to places like India.

"It is a totally unnecessary cost-cutting exercise that creates significant customer disharmony.

"Our call centre in Scarborough proves this and shows we can compete here in the UK in terms of productivity, costs and in the quality of service.

"Our recruitment policy focuses on communication skills and potential rather than direct experience.

"We have been able to recruit and train a new workforce from a diverse range of backgrounds and employment.

"We would be pleased to hear from people open to learning new skills irrespective of their background or employment status."

Around 30 new full and part- time positions are on offer.
