SCARBOROUGH is set to lose another high street store.
The Early Learning Centre, in Newborough, will shut on Saturday February 13, leaving the future of its six workers in doubt and shoppers deeply "shocked".

The company refused to reveal to the Evening News details of what effect the move will have on staff, and said customers must now have to travel to their nearest branch in York.

The closure is another blow to Scarborough's economy and marks the changing face of the town centre after the loss of Woolworths, Wallis, Barratts and Card Warehouse during the recession.

The town is set to get a Poundland store at the former Woolworths site, and Mountain Warehouse and women's clothing outlet Viyella have recently opened. But town centre manager Malcolm Hall said the loss of the Early Learning Centre was sad news.

He said: "It is disappointing and surprising that the company are leaving the town and it will be very frustrating for a number of people in the town because the shop is very valuable for parents looking to buy not only toys, but educational goods too.

"I was in the store prior to Christmas and it seemed to be doing very well so this is a shock. We hope it won't stay empty for long and that an equally good store will take its place."

Mr Hall said the closure did not reflect the sense of recovery in the town.

How many shop closures were there prior to the appointment of a "Town Centre Manager" ?????
Is it the roll of the "Town Centre Manager" to encourage as many pound and charity shops as possible??
Who pays for the "Town Centre Manager" and is the town getting value for money ???
Probably get deleted but food for thought !!!

So much for enterprising Scarborough

The town is full of pound shops and charity shops that to me speaks volumes. Many people in Scarborough are in minimum wage and cant afford anything else, what we need is to encourage big employers that pay well (tall order) and then we can have better shops

Mind you even Tescos are no advertising jobs n Poland for Polish workers to work here

#3, I don't think you can blame the recession on the Town centre manager, its not really their fault that shops aren't profitable. However, some questions need to be asked-
1) Are more shops going to close down?
2) Is there any hope of them being replaced by anything useful?
3) Assuming the dynamic go getting days of yore are behind us, can a town centre manager have any control over developments (quality shopping experience, correct shops etc)?

If the answers to the above are Yes, No and No then we have to get what we are given, like it and lump it and get rid of the manager and save the money to spend on something more useful. Leave the town centre to manage itself, it will have no problem shutting shops all on its own, we don't need to pay someone to oversee the recession!!

#6, Reoovery, its truly laughable! Where do they get the idea there is a recovery? What figures reflect this? Do they honestly have that little grasp on things? People comment on us being a bunch of miserable moaners on here but is that any surprise with pompous guff like this being espoused. Its a shame ELC is closing, SBC could hold their meetings there, plenty of things to keep their little creative minds busy.

Could whoever deleted no 6 own up please, log on and tell us why? There was nothing wrong with that comment, unless you have the emotional constitution of a wet flannel. I wish it displayed a reason as to why the comment was so offensive.

#8 Interesting comment; my own experience of the place was very much the opposite. Maybe you would like to elaborate?

Also, I too would like to question what exactly the Town Centre Manager does, other than mouth platitudes to the SEN when a shop closes down.
